Ethena (ENA) recorded a growth rate nearly three times the market average, driven by a governance overhaul that included an expansion of stablecoin supply and conditional token buybacks.
According to cryptocurrency market data aggregator CoinMarketCap on September 4 (local time), Ethena traded at $0.169, up 13.63% over 24 hours. During the same period, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization rose by 4.66%, and Bitcoin (BTC) by 5.36%, indicating that ENA significantly outperformed the broader market's strength.
The key factor driving the surge was the growth of the Ethena ecosystem. The supply of its native stablecoin, USDe, increased by 10.4% to $4.26 billion. The expanded use of USDe was considered a factor that could strengthen the protocol's revenue generation structure and enhance the utility value of ENA within the network ecosystem.
Governance changes also stimulated buying sentiment. The Ethena community unanimously passed a proposal to use protocol fees for ENA buybacks. This structure automatically triggers token buybacks when the USDe supply reaches $7.5 billion. Although conditions still need to be met, it received a positive response as a concrete mechanism was established to link the protocol's growth achievements to the value of ENA.
The macroeconomic environment also contributed to the gains. Concerns about interest rate hikes by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) eased, spreading risk-on sentiment across the broader cryptocurrency market. ENA's 24-hour trading volume surged by 74.94% to $884 million. The price increase and trading volume, significantly exceeding the market average, indicate that individual demand for the Ethena ecosystem has flowed in, beyond a mere general market rally.
In the short term, whether the $0.16 support level holds is crucial. If this price level is maintained, it could retest the $0.18 resistance, but if the support breaks, there's a possibility of a correction down to $0.15. With the U.S. August Consumer Price Index (CPI) to be released on September 11 determining the overall market direction, the continued increase in USDe supply towards the $7.5 billion token buyback condition will be a key variable for determining the medium to long-term uptrend.
