Adam Back, founder of Blockstream, has officially denied a New York Times report claiming he is Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin (BTC).
According to a Yahoo Finance report on April 9 (local time), Back dismissed various allegations made by the New York Times via social media, stating, "I am not Satoshi."
The New York Times had previously named Back as the most likely candidate for Satoshi Nakamoto after 18 months of investigation. The research team cited the technical similarities between Hashcash, a proof-of-work system developed by Back in 1997, and the Bitcoin whitepaper as key evidence. Furthermore, a stylistic analysis using artificial intelligence also suggested that Back's writing habits largely matched those of Satoshi.
Back acknowledged that his early research overlapped with Bitcoin but explained that this was due to the strong collaborative nature of the cypherpunk community. He emphasized that Satoshi's anonymity is crucial for maintaining Bitcoin's neutrality and decentralized philosophy. Back stated his view that attempts to uncover Satoshi's identity do not benefit the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Despite Back's denial, the industry expects the debate surrounding Satoshi's identity not to easily subside. This is because Back is a pioneer in blockchain technology and has been deeply involved since the early development stages of Bitcoin. Experts are urging a focus on the technical achievements and value that Bitcoin has accomplished, rather than on who Satoshi Nakamoto is.
Bitcoin has established its status as an asset by building an independent ecosystem even in the absence of its founder. Back's recent statement served as an opportunity to once again highlight anonymity, a core value of Bitcoin. Market participants are closely monitoring the potential impact of speculative reports based on technical evidence on market volatility and are maintaining a cautious investment stance.
