A man in his 20s who defrauded users of the U.S. virtual asset exchange Coinbase (COIN) through impersonation scams, stealing virtual assets worth approximately $16 million, has been sentenced to prison.
According to U.Today, a virtual asset specialized media outlet, on September 24 (local time), the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced that Ronald Spektor (23), who stole approximately $16 million from about 100 Coinbase customers through sophisticated social engineering scams, was sentenced to an indeterminate prison term of 4 to 12 years.
On September 2, Spektor pleaded guilty to all 31 charges against him, including first-degree money laundering, first-degree grand larceny, and first-degree criminal possession of stolen property. The prosecution sought a sentence of 7 to 21 years, but the court sentenced him to 4 to 12 years. Along with the sentencing, the court ordered the forfeiture of over $500,000 in cash, virtual assets, and personal property, as well as payment of restitution to victims.
This case did not stem from a security vulnerability in the exchange itself, but from a sophisticated impersonation scheme. Spektor impersonated a Coinbase security staff member, falsely claiming that accounts were exposed to hacking threats, then induced users to transfer assets to a "safe" wallet to steal them, or obtained wallet recovery phrases (seed phrases). One victim in Pennsylvania lost $53,150 after receiving fake security texts and calls, while single incidents in California and Virginia resulted in losses exceeding $1 million and $900,000, respectively.
The stolen assets were exchanged for various virtual assets, then cashed out and spent on gambling sites, online shopping malls, and other venues. Investigating authorities apprehended him by analyzing blockchain transactions, tracking his home internet protocol (IP) address, and obtaining Telegram and Discord chat records. With Spektor's guilty plea bringing the case to a close, investor vigilance against exchange impersonation phishing is expected to increase further.
