According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office in the US, Ronald Spector (23), who impersonated a Coinbase employee and stole approximately $16 million worth of cryptocurrency from about 100 users, was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison. Spector induced victims to transfer their assets to a secure wallet or obtained wallet seed phrases by claiming their accounts were at risk of being hacked, thereby stealing their cryptocurrency. This was a social engineering fraud tactic, not a hack of the Coinbase system. On the 2nd, he pleaded guilty to all 31 charges, including money laundering and grand larceny. The court also ordered the forfeiture of assets, including over $500,000 in cash and cryptocurrency, and restitution to victims.
