When carrying a shopping basket or preparing coffee, even taking out a smartphone for a short call feels cumbersome. What if you could listen to music through your glasses and talk to an AI? Meta's unveiled audio-centric glasses demonstrate a way to use AI beyond the screen.
On September 23, at 'Connect 2026', Meta announced 'Ray-Ban Meta Audio' in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica. These AI glasses do not have a camera and focus on voice-based interaction.
According to Meta, the product weighs 43g and supports music/podcast playback, calls, and conversations with an AI assistant. It is explained that it can be used for up to 12 hours on a single charge. This is a manufacturer-announced figure, and actual usage time may vary depending on how it is used. The starting price is $349. Pre-orders officially began on September 23, with shipping scheduled for October 13. Prescription lenses are also supported.
A notable aspect of the product's direction is that it emphasizes 'what tasks can be handled while wearing glasses' rather than 'what can be captured with glasses'. For users who already wear glasses, this can be understood as integrating music and call functions into their everyday eyewear. However, the pressure when worn for a long time, call quality in noisy environments, and sound leakage to the surroundings need to be evaluated through actual use.
At the same event, Meta also announced its plan to connect its personal AI agent 'Muse' to the AI glasses. Muse was introduced in an earlier announcement on September 8 as a service that performs multi-step tasks such as sending emails or booking travel. Meta explained that it designed the system to seek user approval before sensitive actions like purchases or email sending, and to allow users to define the services to connect and the scope of access.
When such a structure is applied to glasses, voice can become a channel for entrusting tasks, beyond just a simple search tool. However, even if requesting through glasses becomes convenient, the importance of final confirmation does not decrease. Items where errors could lead to actual actions, such as the date and time of an appointment, the recipient of a message, or the payment amount, must be confirmable by the user.
What domestic readers should pay attention to is the distinction between product lines and services. Meta also announced the entry of a separate product line, 'Meta Glasses', into the Korean market. However, this announcement alone does not confirm the simultaneous sale of the new product 'Ray-Ban Meta Audio' in Korea and the domestic support of all AI functions.
As of September 24, the announcement did not confirm the Korean sale price of Ray-Ban Meta Audio or the scope of Korean AI support. Since Muse was also initially announced with the US as the primary target, it is necessary to separately confirm the countries where the device is sold and where the agent service is available.
The camera-free design can alleviate concerns related to photo and video recording. However, this does not eliminate the need to review voice data processing and access rights for connected services. The practicality of AI glasses will become apparent when the convenience of less frequent smartphone use is combined with the user's ability to understand and control the tasks entrusted to them.
