Nasdaq, a leading global stock exchange, has made a strategic investment of $100 million in the parent company of Kraken, a major cryptocurrency exchange, to gain a foothold in the stock tokenization market.
According to investment specialized media The Motley Fool on September 24 (local time), Nasdaq (NDAQ) announced that it has invested $100 million in Payward, Kraken's parent company, through its venture investment arm, Nasdaq Ventures. This collaboration is a step towards fully establishing a 24/7 real-time settlement stock trading infrastructure, focusing on completing a tokenized stock platform that maximizes reliability and security based on the Nasdaq Equity Token (NET) framework that the two companies have jointly pursued.
Currently, tokenized stocks circulating in the market are recorded and traded on the blockchain, but they have a structural limitation in that investors only hold contractual claims to the shares rather than directly securing actual stock ownership. In contrast, the system jointly developed by Nasdaq and Payward aims for a groundbreaking evolution that grants investors direct stock ownership and fully guarantees the same rights as traditional stocks, such as voting rights at general meetings of shareholders.
Nasdaq emphasized in a press release that the ultimate goal of this collaboration is to build a more closely connected financial system while thoroughly upholding the trust, transparency, and integrity that are the foundation of capital formation. Although the average trading volume of the tokenized stock market is still negligible compared to traditional exchange volumes, this project is expected to redefine industry standards and have a massive ripple effect on both Nasdaq and Kraken if it successfully takes root.
Nasdaq and Payward have set the official launch target for the Nasdaq Equity Token platform for the second quarter of 2027, with plans to initially introduce it to the market in a pilot operation form. However, given the rapid pace of technological innovation in the blockchain industry, the possibility that a competing platform prioritizing reliability could gain dominance before the system officially goes live remains a market variable.
Experts predict that while Nasdaq may not be the first entrant into the tokenized stock market, the combination of traditional finance's regulatory credibility and Kraken's cryptocurrency infrastructure could secure strong market dominance. Investors are also advised to closely monitor changes in the tokenized stock ecosystem until the launch and pay attention to whether the two companies can maintain their technological edge.
