Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla (TSLA) and SpaceX (SPCX), has identified AI and robots as the only path to universal high income.
According to Benzinga on September 15 (local time), Musk quoted economist Milton Friedman's past assertion on X (formerly Twitter). Friedman had argued that a welfare state and open immigration cannot be maintained simultaneously. Musk stated, “A welfare state and open immigration will clearly bankrupt any country.”
Musk presented AI and robots as the solution. He emphasized, “AI and robots are the only way to provide universal high income to everyone on Earth.” Musk had previously stated that universal high income could become possible if AI significantly boosts productivity.
Musk's claims were met with criticism from politicians. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders had raised questions about how to fund universal basic income. He pointed out that it's difficult to secure vast resources when billionaires don't even support a 5% tax on their wealth.
U.S. Senator Rand Paul recently called for stricter immigration controls and a reduction in taxpayer support programs for some non-citizens. He argued that the burden of illegal immigration falls on border regions, hospitals, and legal immigrants. Musk's remarks emerged amidst the ongoing debate in the U.S. surrounding welfare and immigration.
Last month, Musk also criticized New York City's plan to operate city-owned grocery stores. He argued that such policies would be unnecessary if AI and robots could provide goods and services for free. Musk continues to view AI and robots as key tools for expanding productivity and achieving universal high income.
