Father, a high-ranking police officer, worked at Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju until recently
The son of a high-ranking police executive is under investigation on charges of committing coin investment fraud against acquaintances by leveraging his father's position.
According to legal circles on the 15th, the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office is investigating B, a man in his 20s and the son of incumbent high-ranking police executive A, on fraud charges.
B is accused of receiving 220 million won from two acquaintances multiple times between 2021 and 2024, promising 'high returns if they invest in a crypto company he knows,' then only repaying a portion and not returning the rest.
In particular, B is known to have encouraged some victims to invest by saying, 'my father is an incumbent police executive.'
He is also reportedly facing charges of receiving money from another acquaintance through a 'loan' and not repaying it.
Gimpo Police Station launched an investigation after receiving the complaint and transferred B to the prosecution in July last year. Following the prosecution's request for supplementary investigation, the results were reported in October last year. Currently, the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office is investigating the case.
A prosecutor's official stated, 'It is difficult to disclose details as the investigation is ongoing.'
Furthermore, another investigation official stated that it has 'not been confirmed' whether A, B's father, received requests for repayment from the victims.
Yonhap News attempted to contact A multiple times to hear his statement regarding B's fraud charges, but was unsuccessful.
A is known to have worked until recently at the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju, which came under fire for shoddy investigation and suspicions of external pressure in connection with the 'high school girl murderer' Jang Yoon-ki case.
