Prosecution investigates 20s who committed coin investment fraud by claiming 'father is a police executive'

Father, a high-ranking police official, worked at Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju until recently.

The son of a high-ranking police executive is under investigation on charges of committing coin investment fraud targeting acquaintances by leveraging his father's status.

According to legal circles on the 15th, the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office is investigating B, a man in his 20s and the son of current high-ranking police executive A, on fraud charges.

B is accused of receiving 220 million won multiple times from two acquaintances between 2021 and 2024, promising "high returns if you invest in a coin company I know," but only repaying a portion and not returning the rest.

In particular, B is known to have encouraged investment to some victims by saying, "My father is a current police executive."

He is also reportedly accused of receiving money from another acquaintance in the form of a 'loan' and then failing to repay it.

The Gimpo Police Station launched an investigation after receiving the complaint and transferred B to the prosecution in July last year. Following the prosecution's request for supplementary investigation, the results were reported in October last year. Currently, the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office is investigating.

A prosecution official stated, "Since it is an ongoing investigation, detailed information cannot be disclosed."

Furthermore, another investigative official stated that it "has not been confirmed" whether B's father, A, received demands for repayment from the victims.

Yonhap News attempted to contact A multiple times to hear his position regarding B's fraud charges, but was unsuccessful.

A is known to have worked until recently at the Gwangsan Police Station in Gwangju, which came under scrutiny for poor investigation and allegations of external pressure in connection with the 'high school girl murder case' involving Jang Yoon-gi.
