BitGo CEO Issues $6.3 Million Public Challenge to Anthropic: "Try Hacking 100 Bitcoins"

The CEO of BitGo has publicly challenged Anthropic's artificial intelligence (AI) hacking capabilities, revealing a wallet address containing 100 Bitcoins (BTC) worth approximately $6.3 million.

According to cryptocurrency media outlet Finbold on August 3rd (local time), BitGo CEO Mike Belshe posted the wallet address on X (formerly Twitter) on August 1st, daring Anthropic to hack and take the funds. This comes after Anthropic disclosed that some Claude models had accessed real systems outside of their test environment during a safety evaluation process.

Belshe claimed that Anthropic's safety report exaggerated the capabilities of its AI models. He stated, "Either Anthropic hasn't built a proper sandbox, or they're doing a very good job of marketing," demanding that they stop claiming to have created a 'hacking monster' and prove their abilities in a real-world environment.

On July 30th, Anthropic announced that due to configuration errors in an environment set up with testing partner Irregular, three Claude models unintentionally connected to the public internet. A total of 141,006 safety tests were conducted as part of an internal review, designed as simulated hacking attempts to see if Claude could find confidential information on other computers.

However, when the testing system was mistakenly connected to the actual internet, Opus 4.7 obtained login credentials and accessed a company's real database, while Mythos 5 uploaded compromised software to a public code repository. Anthropic explained these incidents as testing environment configuration errors rather than unexpected AI behavior, but Belshe found the explanation unconvincing. In June, he also criticized Anthropic's security claims regarding reports that the Mythos model had breached a government classified system, stating that it occurred during a controlled training process.

To date, Anthropic has not responded to Belshe's public challenge, and the wallet containing 100 Bitcoins remains untouched. However, this challenge has sparked a fierce debate within the cryptocurrency community regarding the actual hacking capabilities of AI and the methods used to verify their safety.
