U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 30th (local time) that he would abolish tariffs on Scotch whisky, a major product of Scotland, UK, for King Charles III of the United Kingdom, who concluded his four-day state visit to the United States.
President Trump wrote on his social media, Truth Social, on the same day, "To commemorate the King and Queen of England, who just left the White House to return to their beautiful country, I will abolish tariffs and restrictions on whisky so that Scotland can cooperate with Kentucky on whisky-bourbon issues."
The whisky tariff that President Trump announced he would withdraw appears to refer to the 10% tariff imposed on most British products under the new trade agreement between the two countries last year.
President Trump continued, "People have wanted this for a long time, especially given that trade between countries has been active, particularly concerning the wooden barrels (used in whisky production)."
He added, "The King and Queen didn't even ask, but I made it possible to do what no one else could. It was a great honor to host both of them in the United States."
