The customs commissioners of Korea and Japan held their first meeting since the inauguration of the new governments in both countries and agreed to cooperate on customs issues.
According to the Korea Customs Service on the 24th, Commissioner Lee Myung-goo held the '34th Korea-Japan Customs Commissioner Meeting' with Mitsuhiro Teraoka, Director-General of the Customs and Tariff Bureau of Japan's Ministry of Finance, in Seoul the previous day.
Both sides agreed on the need for joint efforts to facilitate trade and respond to economic security amidst the spread of protectionism and instability in supply chains.
Specifically, they confirmed cooperation in implementing international resolutions such as export controls for strategic goods and decided to explore future cooperation measures, including information exchange.
They also decided to initiate discussions on the development of an electronic exchange system for certificates of origin for the application of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
In response to the increase in cross-border e-commerce shipments, they decided to hold regular meetings to facilitate logistics and block illegal and harmful goods.
They also pledged active support for the official operation of the 'Simplified Maritime Clearance System,' which has been in pilot operation in Japan since October last year.
Furthermore, they agreed to vitalize exchanges between regional customs offices.
Commissioner Lee stated, "It is meaningful to be able to resume discussions on customs and border management with Japan, a major trading partner," adding, "We will do our best to promptly implement the agreed-upon measures."
