UPS announces "focus on supporting customers' exercise of rights... up to 3 months for receipt"
U.S. Customs and Border Protection activates tariff refund system... Trump: "I will remember companies that don't apply"
Global logistics companies UPS and FedEx have begun applying for refunds as the U.S. federal government initiated refund procedures for tariffs such as 'reciprocal tariffs' that were ruled illegal, U.S. CNBC reported on the 21st (local time).
According to the report, UPS recently announced that for shipments for which it is registered as the importer of record in the U.S., it is applying for tariff refunds from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on behalf of its customers.
However, UPS explained that it could take up to three months to receive the refund, and only then would the refund be processed for the customer.
In a statement, UPS said, "We are focused on supporting our customers in fully exercising their rights in the complex refund application process," adding, "We will closely monitor legal trends and share progress."
CNBC also reported that FedEx has begun filing tariff refund claims with CBP.
FedEx explained that the refund process is straightforward and that it will return the refunds received from CBP to shippers and consumers.
Previously, CBP activated an online refund system the day before to return approximately $166 billion (about 245 trillion won) in tariffs. Importers and customs brokers can apply for refunds through a dedicated portal.
This measure is a follow-up to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in February that the Trump administration's imposition of tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was an illegal act that infringed on Congress's authority.
Meanwhile, in a phone interview with CNBC on the same day, President Donald Trump was asked if "several large companies like Apple and Amazon are not attempting to get tariff refunds," to which he replied, "If they don't do that, they know me very well," adding, "If they don't do that, I will remember them."
