The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially launched an innovative experiment to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) agent payments and micro-payment functionalities into the future digital euro.
According to Cointelegraph, a cryptocurrency specialized media outlet, on September 29 (local time), the ECB announced that it has begun recruiting new participants for its Digital Euro Innovation Platform and will actively review AI agent payments and machine-to-machine (M2M) interaction technology. This program will be conducted in two parts: functional validation and future use case workshops.
The validation experiments will take place from January to June 2027. Selected private companies will develop electronic receipts, multilateral transactions, conditional payments that execute automatically upon meeting specific criteria, and next-generation payment application interfaces. Concurrently, workshops held at the Frankfurt headquarters will intensively discuss autonomous payment mechanisms between AI agents, ultra-micro payment infrastructure, and application methods for public services.
Separate from this experiment, the ECB is also pursuing a large-scale pilot program that will run for 12 months starting from the second half of 2027. Thirty-six banks and fintech payment companies, including Deutsche Bank AG (DB), Revolut, and Stripe, have already been selected and are preparing for practical testing.
However, the ECB has drawn a line, stating that AI autonomous payments are not necessarily included in the final digital euro specifications. With privacy protection and ensuring user control presented as key challenges, the actual issuance of the digital euro must pass through relevant legislative procedures in the European Union (EU) and receive final approval from the central bank.
