The European Central Bank (ECB) is recruiting participating institutions, including fintech companies and payment providers, to explore ways to utilize AI agents for digital euro payments, Cointelegraph reported. The experiment will run from January to June 2027, and participating institutions will develop functions such as electronic receipts, multilateral transactions, and conditional payments. Workshops held in the first half of 2027 will cover AI-powered payments, micropayments, and machine-to-machine (M2M) interactions. Separately, the ECB is preparing for a 12-month digital euro pilot project to run from the second half of 2027. For this, 36 banks and payment providers, including Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank, have already been selected. However, the issuance of a digital euro requires EU legislation and a final decision by the ECB.
