U.S. diesel prices have hit an all-time high, re-igniting inflation pressures that had been subsiding. The rise in fuel costs across logistics and distribution is showing signs of spilling over into core consumer prices, putting the Federal Reserve's (Fed) monetary policy path on alert.
According to BeInCrypto, a virtual asset media outlet, on September 28 (local time), U.S. highway diesel prices reached $6.529 per gallon, setting a new nominal all-time high. This is a result of a global fuel supply shortage exacerbated by attacks on Russian refineries and conflicts in the Middle East. With the peak shipping season of the autumn harvest and the surge in heating oil demand approaching in winter, soaring fuel prices are increasing cost burdens across the entire supply chain.
It is pointed out that the surge in transportation fuel costs has a much broader impact on the economy than the rise in regular gasoline prices. Torsten Slok, Chief Economist at Apollo Global Management (APO), warned that the demand for diesel used in freight transport is inelastic, meaning that increased logistics costs are fully passed on to business and consumer prices. With pressure on Iran continuing since the inauguration of the Donald Trump administration, the growing burden of fuel costs is also increasing political pressure.
Disruptions to the Fed's inflation management efforts have become inevitable. Analysis suggests that relying solely on core inflation indicators, which exclude energy prices, could miss the secondary ripple effect of surging diesel prices permeating through the distribution network to all core items. With the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in July rising 3.4% year-over-year, still exceeding the Fed's 2% target, additional inflationary pressure from passed-on logistics costs is bolstering arguments for moderating the pace of interest rate cuts.
The virtual asset market has also entered the zone of impact from diesel-driven inflation shock. Rising pressure on U.S. 10-year Treasury yields stimulated profit-taking across risk assets. Bitcoin (BTC), which has been noted as an inflation-hedge asset, tested the $84,000 mark amidst macroeconomic interest rate burdens, and XRP also continued to consolidate around $1.5. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) for September, to be announced in mid-October, are expected to be a test bed for gauging the actual extent of the diesel shock's transmission.
Rising logistics costs have become a new trigger for the macroeconomy, pressuring both the real economy and financial markets simultaneously. Investors are focused on whether diesel prices, which have broken through all-time highs, will shake the trend of price stability and put the brakes on the Fed's monetary easing stance.
