Buterin: "Operating Ethereum Nodes is Easier Thanks to AI"

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), confirmed that operating an Ethereum node at home has become easier than ever thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) hardware boom. He explained that as more users set up high-performance workstations to run AI in local environments, the hardware cost issue for end-users, which was a barrier to node setup, has been resolved through an unexpected synergistic effect.

According to U.Today, a virtual asset specialized media outlet, on September 26 (local time), Buterin disclosed his Geth node specifications via social media. Buterin stated that after data pruning, the node capacity is "only 461 GiB." The analysis suggests that the high-performance PC environments that enthusiasts are largely purchasing to run large language models (LLMs) directly in local and personal environments already far exceed the technical requirements of blockchain nodes.

Software optimization has also significantly reduced the burden of node operation. Thanks to the integration of the EIP-4444 standard, an improvement proposal, and Snap Sync optimization, full node synchronization time has been reduced to approximately 12 hours, and disk space requirements have fallen below 0.5 terabytes (TB). In environments equipped with high-performance graphics processing unit (GPU)-based equipment such as Nvidia RTX 5090 or DGX Spark systems, the specifications required for node operation are minimal.

As more users equip large-capacity, high-speed NVMe solid-state drives (SSDs) to store AI model weights, node operation has become a simple PC background process. When the next hard fork, Glamsterdam, is applied, the synchronization speed at the base layer (L1) level is expected to accelerate further.

The expansion of AI infrastructure is creating positive ripple effects in conjunction with the decentralization of the blockchain ecosystem. The market's attention is focused on how much further the Ethereum network, with significantly lowered barriers to individual verification participation, can shed centralization concerns and expand its decentralized foundation.
