The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on its official website on the 25th (local time) that it has indicted Vietnamese national Trung Nguyen Van, who is accused of involvement in a $16 million cryptocurrency scam. The defendant is accused of being involved in a so-called 'pig butchering' scam, which involves building trust with victims through online dating sites, social media, etc., then luring them to invest in fake cryptocurrency investment platforms and siphoning off their funds. According to the DOJ, one victim believed they were investing in a fake cryptocurrency investment platform called 'Triangle' between June and August 2024, and transferred approximately $16 million worth of cryptocurrency, of which $569,000 was deposited into Van's cryptocurrency wallet. Furthermore, investigations revealed that approximately $53.27 million worth of cryptocurrency was deposited into the same wallet between February 2018 and December 2024, in connection with remittance scams targeting U.S. citizens.
