It was belatedly revealed that Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), former CEO of FTX, previously purchased Uniswap's official .com domain for a large sum exceeding $1 million, only to have it fully reclaimed through legal action without recovering a single penny.
According to BeInCrypto on September 21 (local time), Hayden Adams, founder of decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap (UNI), revealed an anecdote on his X (formerly Twitter) about Bankman-Fried's past purchase of the 'Uniswap.com' domain. He directly disclosed the past behind-the-scenes story while replying to a post related to venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz's (a16z) unregistered domain sale proposal.
According to Adams, the original owner of Uniswap.com demanded more than $1 million from Uniswap. Uniswap refused to pay that amount and halted negotiations. However, Bankman-Fried paid the full exorbitant amount and promptly acquired the domain.
Immediately after purchasing the domain, Bankman-Fried forcefully redirected the access path of that address to a fork exchange that replicated Uniswap's open-source code. Founder Adams stated, "I suspect it was an attempt to show off or harass us." This was effectively an exploitation of the fact that general users often type in the .com address first, as Uniswap operates its official services on a .org address.
This malicious redirection, however, provided Uniswap's legal team with a decisive opportunity for a counterattack. Uniswap's legal representatives categorized this act as malicious use of a domain and initiated legal proceedings. Ultimately, Uniswap fully reclaimed ownership of the domain without incurring a single dollar in cost.
Bankman-Fried, who squandered a large sum, was convicted of fraud in November 2023, sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $11 billion, and is currently serving his sentence. In contrast, Uniswap continues its institutional expansion, including the introduction of a fee burning mechanism and Bitwise's spot ETF application, with the UNI token price showing a solid upward trend around the $8.78 mark.
The cryptocurrency giant's reckless move, aimed at exploiting exorbitant fees and undermining a competitor, ultimately ended in a complete defeat. As the fierce behind-the-scenes story of early DeFi competition is revealed, the importance of brand domain security and legal defense rights is once again drawing attention.
