Tesla, which unveiled 'Cybercab,' an electric vehicle dedicated to autonomous robotaxis (unmanned taxis), in the U.S. earlier this month, has begun a touring exhibition of the Cybercab in major Chinese cities.
According to the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily (Kechuangban Ribao) and Shanghai Securities News on the 18th, Tesla is exhibiting the Cybercab at a shopping mall in Shanghai from the 17th to the 21st. A similar exhibition was held in Beijing on the same day, marking the start of its China tour.
Previously, Tesla held a Cybercab announcement event in Austin, Texas, U.S., where its headquarters are located, on the 3rd, and reportedly held a public event in Japan on the 11th.
The Cybercab is a two-seater vehicle without driving-related devices such as a steering wheel, driver's seat, or pedals, instead featuring a display at the front and increased trunk space. The car doors adopt a 'scissor door' style, opening like wings.
However, Tesla stated that this China touring exhibition is to showcase the vehicle's design and technological philosophy while parked, and is unrelated to launch or sales plans in the Chinese market. It also stated that there are no plans yet to conduct robotaxi-related business in mainland China.
The Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily assessed that the commercialization of Tesla's autonomous driving software 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) in China, along with its economic viability including energy efficiency, and safety, remain challenges.
