Trump warns EU of 'tariffs or trade suspension' over 'Canada associate member' push

U.S. President Donald Trump, on the 16th (local time), warned the European Union (EU) of the possibility of imposing additional tariffs, stating that the EU's proposal to Canada for the status of the EU's first associate member state could be considered a "hostile act."

On this day, President Trump, who visited North Carolina for a local schedule, stepped off Air Force One and told reporters, when asked about the possibility of Canada becoming an EU associate member, "I don't see that as a possibility."

President Trump warned, "If they do that, and I consider it a hostile act, I will impose very high tariffs or suspend trade with Europe on many items."

He further emphasized, "If it's done in good faith, that's fine, but if it's with bad intentions, we will impose very high tariffs on Europe, and that is a possibility."

He also criticized Canada, which previously had trade conflicts with the U.S., calling it a "terrible trade partner."

Regarding the situation of the Iran war, he said, "We hope the war is nearing its end," and "They want a deal, and we will see what happens."

He reiterated, "Iran wants a deal very strongly."

Meanwhile, President Trump emphasized that if the Kennedy Center, a prominent performing arts venue in Washington D.C., wants to proceed with renovations amidst financial difficulties, "enormous subsidies will be needed in the future," and "as our administration is trying to push that forward, the administration's contribution must be recognized."

The Kennedy Center board, after facing a court injunction that hindered their plan to put President Trump's name on the center's exterior walls, last month again pursued a plan to display President Trump's contribution to the center's restoration and remodeling on the exterior walls.

However, when the court did not even allow this, the board decided to close the center, citing financial difficulties and aging facilities.

The board, mostly composed of Trump appointees, argues that if President Trump's contributions are not properly displayed at the center, the likelihood of him providing financial support for the remodeling is slim.
