An analysis suggests that Alphabet (GOOGL)'s AI competitor could expand beyond chatbot companies to include SpaceX.
According to The Motley Fool on September 15 (local time), Alphabet's main AI competitors have so far been concentrated on OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Nvidia. However, it is evaluated that the competitive landscape has changed with SpaceX's acquisition of xAI. SpaceX has secured xAI's Grok and AI research organization and is pursuing a strategy to directly build not only AI models but also computing infrastructure.
The Motley Fool analyzed that Alphabet's true competitive strength lies in the technological ecosystem surrounding Gemini itself, rather than Gemini alone. Alphabet designs its own TPU chips and operates large-scale data centers and Google Cloud. Its ability to distribute AI services to billions of people through Search, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and Workspace is also a strength. Recently, Google Cloud revenue increased by 82% year-over-year, and Gemini's monthly active users reached 950 million.
SpaceX is also accelerating a similar vertical integration strategy. AI computing capacity has expanded from 0.4GW a year ago to 1.4GW recently. SpaceX and Tesla announced an initial investment of $16.8 billion in Terafab, an advanced semiconductor facility in Texas. This facility is designed to produce semiconductors needed for various fields, including SpaceX's future AI computing demands. The Motley Fool noted that SpaceX is not just renting external infrastructure but aims to directly control AI models, computing facilities, and even semiconductors.
The focus of competition could also shift from chatbot performance to infrastructure dominance, according to the analysis. Alphabet has already connected AI models, chips, data centers, cloud, and consumer services. SpaceX is combining AI models, computing infrastructure, semiconductors, and satellite communication networks, and plans to expand computing facilities to orbit in the long term. The Motley Fool believes that as the AI industry becomes more constrained by shortages of power, land, data center capacity, and computing resources, SpaceX's competitive advantage in launch costs, satellite manufacturing, and communication networks could become crucial assets.
However, it is evaluated that Alphabet is far ahead in the current scale and execution of commercial AI businesses. Alphabet has operated AI research, cloud, data center, and software businesses for decades, while SpaceX needs to prove whether its AI strategy can translate into actual revenue. In particular, the economic viability of orbital computing has not yet been confirmed. The Motley Fool assessed that while SpaceX is not an immediate equal competitor to Alphabet, its strategy to integrate everything from AI models to semiconductors, computing, and communication networks is a change that Alphabet investors should watch in the long term.
