Although U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed calls for regulating the pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development as a “scam,” semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia (NVIDIA, NVDA), plummeted.
According to crypto media outlet BeInCrypto on September 14 (local time), Trump called Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who was on stage at the All-In Summit hosted by Silicon Valley investors. When Huang put the call on speakerphone, Trump said, “It’s all a scam. Data centers are great, and AI is bigger than the internet.” He publicly expressed his opposition to arguments for slowing down AI development.
However, the sell-off in semiconductor stocks had been ongoing even before the call between Trump and Huang. Nvidia’s stock price fell by about 3% during Monday’s trading compared to the closing price of the previous trading day. Intel fell by 7%, and AMD by 6%. The iShares Semiconductor ETF, which tracks the semiconductor sector, also dropped by 6%.
Market jitters coincided with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for regulating the pace of AI development, raised over the weekend. Amodei argued that the pace of development should be controlled given the rapidly increasing performance of next-generation AI models. The media reported that Sam Altman and Elon Musk also joined the movement to slow down AI development.
Investor Michael Burry assessed the calls for regulating AI development speed as an exaggerated movement linked to companies preparing for future IPOs. BeInCrypto also pointed out that Intel, which has relatively low exposure to the AI business, experienced the largest drop.
The media reported that there was no change in Nvidia’s order backlog. Although Trump expressed strong optimism about the AI industry, the stock prices of related companies showed significant volatility amid debates surrounding the pace of AI development and increased investment.
