Brazil's largest bank, Banco do Brasil, participated as an investor in Latin America's first blockchain-based digital structured bond transaction.
According to Bitcoin.com on September 4 (local time), the transaction volume was $5 million. Citigroup Global Markets Funding Luxembourg S.C.A. issued the digital structured bond, and Banco do Brasil participated as an investor through its own fund management division. The transaction took place on August 19.
This bond was issued on Euroclear's Digital Financial Market Infrastructure (D-FMI). Unlike traditional structured bonds, which go through multiple systems, intermediaries, and sequential work procedures, this bond is issued, registered, and managed on a blockchain-based infrastructure. It connects transaction participants to a single infrastructure, reducing procedures and enhancing transaction transparency and traceability.
Citi Issuer Services participated as the issuing and payment agent for the bond through Citibank N.A. London Branch. Banco do Brasil explained this transaction as part of its strategy to respond to changes in financial market infrastructure and to explore new products and services for institutional investors.
Francisco Lassalvia, Vice President of Wholesale Banking at Banco do Brasil, stated, “We believe that the digitalization of financial markets is a long-term structural trend.” He added, “Such initiatives can contribute to building standards, governance, and infrastructure that will support a new generation of digital assets,” emphasizing market efficiency and secure innovation.
In this transaction, Banco do Brasil participated as an investor, not as the bond issuer. The issuance of a $5 million digital structured bond marks an instance where blockchain-based financial market infrastructure is being applied to actual transactions in the traditional financial sector of Latin America.
