An analysis has emerged suggesting that Bitcoin (BTC) ownership has surpassed the investment proportions of gold and the S&P 500. The number of global holders is estimated to be up to 500 million.

According to Benzinga on September 2 (local time), crypto analyst Willy Woo stated that approximately 5% of the world's population holds Bitcoin. He estimated the S&P 500 investment proportion at about 4% and gold at about 4.5%. Woo explained that he applied reliable Bitcoin adoption data, such as Glassnode's on-chain data and Crypto.com reports, to an S-curve adoption model.

Woo assessed that at its current level of adoption, Bitcoin is “merely a financial asset.” However, he argued that if the adoption rate rises to 50%, it could signify “the separation of money and state.” In response to the counter-argument that stock investors are far more numerous than Bitcoin holders, he explained that while gold and the S&P 500 are primarily used for investment purposes, Bitcoin is also used as a means to solve currency problems in regions with capital controls or hyperinflation.

In terms of the number of holders by country, India had the most with 68 million. The ownership rate relative to India's population is 4.6%. In the United States, approximately 50 million people were estimated to hold Bitcoin, with an ownership rate of 14%. Vietnam recorded the highest penetration rate by country at 17%.

Despite China's complete ban on cryptocurrency trading and mining, approximately 33 million people are estimated to hold Bitcoin. This accounts for 2.3% of China's total population. Combining the country-specific data presented by Woo, the global Bitcoin adoption rate is estimated to be between 4.5% and 6%.

Woo's analysis showed that Bitcoin's ownership proportion has already surpassed that of gold and the S&P 500.
