The short interest ratio for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has hit a two-week high, intensifying market concerns that the stock's recent sharp decline following its earnings announcement will continue for some time.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet Finbold on August 6 (local time), the short volume ratio for AMD stock reached 62.60% in Wednesday's trading on August 5, soaring to its highest level in two weeks. This figure significantly surpasses the previous high of 55.15% measured by financial data platform Fintel on July 31, indicating that sell bets are overwhelmingly dominant over buy pressure.
The primary reason for this surge in bearish bets is the sharply deteriorated investor sentiment following the latest quarterly earnings announcement. Despite AMD surpassing Wall Street expectations in key performance indicators, its stock price plummeted 7.04% in just one session, from $518.58 to $482.05. It continued its decline in pre-market trading on August 6, falling an additional 0.99% to $477.30.
The market offers various interpretations regarding the sharp drop in stock price despite strong earnings. The first analysis suggests that amidst growing skepticism about the return on investment (ROI) in artificial intelligence (AI), traders' expectations for earnings were much higher than Wall Street analysts' forecasts, and the actual results fell short. Additionally, Elon Musk's declaration on the day of the earnings announcement that SpaceX (SPCX) would only use Nvidia (NVDA) products is also believed to have had a negative impact.
However, there are also observations in the market that this stock price weakness will not last long. Other big tech companies, such as Google (GOOGL) and Meta Platforms (META), which sharply declined after their recent earnings announcements, have previously recovered most of their losses within a few weeks.
Wall Street professional institutions also maintained a "Strong Buy" rating for AMD, contrary to the market's initial reaction, and supported a positive long-term outlook by setting a 12-month target price of $635.82.
