SpaceX (SPCX) poured approximately $16 billion into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the second quarter. CEO Elon Musk declared that rocket scientists are the key competitive advantage that will revolutionize the data center market.
According to Fortune on August 5 (local time), Musk stated in SpaceX's first earnings announcement after its listing that the engineering capabilities used to design reusable rockets and satellites can be directly applied to building AI data centers. He likened the competitive landscape to “the New York Yankees playing a Little League team.” He added, “Data centers are a trivial problem compared to the issues rocket engineers deal with daily.”
SpaceX rapidly expanded its related investments after acquiring xAI, an AI company owned by Musk, in February. Total capital expenditures increased from $10 billion in Q1 to $18.4 billion in Q2. Company executives announced plans to maintain similar spending levels for the next two quarters.
The growth rate of the AI business was also steep. Q2 AI revenue reached $2.6 billion, a 213% increase from the previous quarter. The secured cloud service contracts amounted to $14.1 billion. Key counterparties included Anthropic and Google.
SpaceX plans to expand its AI computing business by leveraging a large volume of Nvidia (NVDA) graphics processing units (GPUs). Musk described Nvidia's Vera Rubin as “the best AI computing system in the industry.” He stated, “We will receive a significant portion of GPUs next year in consultation with Nvidia.”
SpaceX's computing facility capacity was 1.4 gigawatts at the end of Q2 and is expected to exceed 2 gigawatts by the end of the year. Musk set a target to expand power and cooling facility capacity to 20 gigawatts by the end of 2027. He explained that even with delays, they could reach approximately 15 gigawatts. He emphasized, “Rockets are machines inherently trying to blow themselves up,” and applying the discipline and technical skills gained from rocket development to data centers is a much simpler task.
