25,000 tons subject to tariff quota this year... 9,784 tons imported so far
On the 29th, the inter-ministerial Livelihood Stabilization Support Group conducted an on-site inspection at Busan Gamcheon Port Logistics Center to verify whether the benefits of the reduced tariff quota on imported frozen mackerel were properly reflected at the wholesale and retail distribution stages.
To stabilize mackerel prices, the government is applying a tariff quota rate (10% → 0%) to 25,000 tons of imported frozen mackerel. As of the end of this month, 53 companies have imported a total of 9,784 tons under the tariff quota.
During the on-site meeting, importers evaluated that the tariff quota was alleviating factors contributing to rising import prices, such as unstable global supply and demand conditions due to reduced Norwegian mackerel fishing quotas.
Distributors decided to streamline processing and distribution stages so that the tariff reduction effect from the tariff quota application could lead to stable prices for final consumers. They also plan to cooperate to ensure consumers can experience the price stabilization effect through various initiatives, including discount promotions.
Jang Do-hwan, head of the Livelihood Stabilization Support Group, stated, "The government will do its best to swiftly resolve on-site difficulties for the industry with relevant ministries so that consumers can feel the effect of price stabilization."
