Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.A·BRK.B) cash and short-term U.S. Treasury bills accumulated under Warren Buffett's leadership reached an all-time high of $397.4 billion. This amount is enough to buy 476 S&P 500 companies outright.
According to the cryptocurrency specialized media BeInCrypto on July 28 (local time), Berkshire Hathaway's liquid assets increased from $373 billion at the end of 2025 to $397.4 billion in March of this year. Barchart analyzed that these funds could be used to acquire 476 S&P 500 companies individually. The first quarter of this year was the first quarter under CEO Greg Abel's management.
The increase in cash was coupled with a deliberate stock selling strategy. Berkshire Hathaway sold more stocks than it bought for 14 consecutive quarters. In the first quarter of this year, it disposed of $24.1 billion worth of stocks and purchased $16 billion worth. Applying current treasury yields, the company can earn approximately $20 billion annually from its holdings.
Warren Buffett stated, “Good businesses should generate much higher returns than virtually risk-free assets like U.S. Treasury bills.” This remark reaffirmed his long-standing principle of seeking companies that can maintain high capital returns over the long term, rather than rushing to invest large amounts of cash.
Abel has begun to invest some of the large cash pile. Berkshire Hathaway shareholders approved a plan to invest $8.5 billion in the acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison. The scale of share buybacks also increased at the fastest pace since 2021. Its stake in Alphabet (GOOGL·GOOG) expanded to $31 billion, including a $10 billion private purchase initiated by Buffett.
Berkshire Hathaway's operating profit in the first quarter increased by 18% year-over-year to $11.35 billion. Net income more than doubled to approximately $10.1 billion. The company is scheduled to announce its second-quarter earnings around August 3.
