The number of immigrants from Mexico residing in the United States accounts for 22% of the total immigrant population.

This means one in five immigrants in the U.S. is from Mexico, making it the largest proportion from a single country.

Furthermore, the number of undocumented immigrants from Mexico was found to be 5.5 million, accounting for 40% of the total undocumented immigrant population in the U.S. (13.7 million), recording the largest proportion.

According to a report by the Mexican daily La Jornada on the 28th (local time), citing a demographic analysis report from the U.S. Migration Policy Institute (MPI), approximately 11.1 million immigrants born in Mexico have moved to the United States. This accounts for 22% of the total immigrant population in the U.S. (50.2 million).

The number of Mexican immigrants in the U.S. has increased more than fivefold since 1980, but after peaking at over 11.7 million in 2007, it has shown a slight decline. Andrés Ayala, the researcher who authored the report, predicted that this decline would continue for some time.

The duration of settlement for Mexican immigrants in the U.S. is trending longer. Over 60% of the total were counted as long-term residents, having lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years. However, their socio-economic conditions were found to be relatively poor. Mexican immigrants had lower English proficiency and a lower rate of acquiring U.S. citizenship compared to immigrants from other countries.

Income levels were also generally low. As of 2024, the average income for Mexican immigrant households was $68,700 (100 million KRW), which was below the average for all immigrant households in the U.S. By occupation, more than half of them were engaged in low-wage, manual labor fields such as service, construction, repair and maintenance, and resource development.

By place of residence, more than half of Mexican-born immigrants were concentrated in California and Texas, followed by Illinois, Arizona, and Florida.

Mexico also maintained the 'label' of being the largest country of origin for undocumented immigrants in the U.S. According to MPI's estimates for 2023, the number of undocumented immigrants from Mexico in the U.S. was approximately 5.5 million, making it the overwhelming No. 1 among single countries.
