Apple (AAPL) has been embroiled in a $1.8 million lawsuit over damages from a fake Bitcoin (BTC) wallet app.
According to cryptocurrency media outlet Cointelegraph on July 28 (local time), James Ramirez, Christopher Ellis, and Jalen Delgado filed a lawsuit against Apple in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The three claimed to have lost over $1.8 million worth of Bitcoin after downloading a fake Sparrow Wallet from the App Store.
The plaintiffs stated that their Bitcoin holdings were drained after they entered their seed phrases into the fake app. Ramirez claimed a loss of approximately $875,000, Ellis $840,000, and Delgado $120,000. The losses occurred in 2025.
Sparrow Wallet is only available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and there is no official iOS app. Craig Raw, the developer of Sparrow Wallet, has publicly criticized Apple regarding the appearance of fake apps on the App Store.
The plaintiffs argued that Apple promoted the App Store as a trustworthy platform for transactions yet failed to adequately review and monitor registered apps. Apple stated that it has removed the app impersonating Sparrow Wallet and terminated the related developer account. It also added that it takes necessary action when users and developers report apps that violate operating guidelines.
