Anthropic has recruited Ben Bernanke, former chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) and Nobel laureate, as a member of its independent governance structure.
Anthropic announced on the 9th (local time) that it has appointed former Chairman Bernanke as a new member of its 'Long-Term Benefit Trust' (LTBT), which has the authority to appoint and dismiss a majority of the company's board of directors.
Former Chairman Bernanke led the Fed from 2006 to 2014 and is credited with overcoming the 2008 global financial crisis.
He received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022 for his research on the role of banks in the Great Depression and financial crises, while serving as head of the economics department at Princeton University.
Regarding his joining Anthropic's LTBT, former Chairman Bernanke stated, "The potential of artificial intelligence is enormous, and the range of its potential outcomes is also broad. Anthropic has established a unique governance structure to ensure that the long-term benefits AI brings to humanity outweigh the risks. I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to this important mission."
Daniela Amodei, President of Anthropic, expressed her expectation for former Chairman Bernanke, saying, "His judgment will help us better predict and respond to the impact of advanced AI on the global workforce and economy."
The LTBT is a body independent of management and investors, and its role is to oversee the responsible development of AI for the long-term benefit of humanity.
Members do not hold equity or share in profits but have the authority to appoint and dismiss a majority of the board members.
In addition to former Chairman Bernanke, other members include Chairman Neal Buddy Shah, CEO of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, former President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
