CoinMarketCap has issued an urgent warning regarding fraudulent promotions using the 'CMC Token'. CoinMarketCap stated that it has never issued an official token or coin, and that token promotions utilizing the CMC name are likely fake or fraudulent.
U.Today reported on the 13th that CoinMarketCap issued a fraud alert to the cryptocurrency community. CoinMarketCap warned via X (formerly Twitter) that “CoinMarketCap does not hold any tokens or coins” and that any posts promoting CMC tokens should be considered fake or fraudulent.
This warning comes amid an increase in impersonation schemes exploiting the recognition of major cryptocurrency brands and the launch of fake tokens. It is reported that fraudsters create unofficial tokens using the names of famous platforms or tokens, make them appear like real projects to investors, and then attempt to steal funds.
U.Today stated that social media promotion scams, including fake exchange tokens, impersonated websites, and claims of early access or special investment opportunities, have been increasing in the cryptocurrency market recently. These methods target not only inexperienced traders and investors but also general users.
CoinMarketCap reiterated that any token using the CMC name or claiming to be issued by CoinMarketCap should be considered a scam. Since CoinMarketCap has not issued an official token, sales or promotions of tokens under the CMC brand should not be trusted, the company explained.
CoinMarketCap also advised caution against acts of impersonating its members in a separate post. The company explained that it does not operate a phone number and does not directly call users. If a call is received impersonating CoinMarketCap, it should be regarded as a fraudulent contact, and in suspicious situations, verification should be sought through official customer support channels.
This warning shows that attempts to defraud by exploiting the credibility of famous brands continue in the cryptocurrency market. CoinMarketCap clarified that it has not launched an official cryptocurrency and does not call users, emphasizing the need to be wary of CMC token promotions and impersonation calls.
