▲ Bitcoin (BTC) Whale
A Bitcoin (BTC) whale wallet that had been dormant for over 12 years moved 500 BTC to a new address, attracting market attention. The wallet, created in 2013, first moved its holdings on the afternoon of May 10 (local time), with the transferred amount exceeding $40 million.
Bitcoin.com reported on May 10 (local time) that a Bitcoin address created in November 2013 transferred 500 BTC to a newly created Bech32 Segwit address after 12.5 years. At the time, Bitcoin was trading in the low $80,000 range, and the value of the moved amount was estimated to be over $40 million.
According to Bitcoin.com, 11 dormant wallets moved for the first time that day. Dormant wallets created between 2013 and 2017 moved a total of 859.13 BTC between blocks 948694 and 948822, with a total value of $69.47 million.
The oldest wallet was an address created on November 27, 2013. This wallet moved 500 BTC at block height 948822. In November 2013, the price of one Bitcoin was $923, and the value of those 500 BTC at the time was $461,500. Its current value has exceeded $40 million.
Wallets created in 2014 also saw four movements of 10 BTC each. However, larger movements that day came from six wallets created in 2017. These wallets moved a total of 319.13 BTC, with one transaction being 125.00232012 BTC. These 319.13 BTC, along with other UTXOs, flowed into a single new wallet, which is now reported to hold 594.831 BTC.
While the funds moved from the 2017 wallets remain in a new Bech32 wallet, the 500 BTC from the 2013 wallet have moved through several new addresses since the initial transfer. Bitcoin.com reported that no direct selling pressure was observed from this activity.
This movement demonstrates that dormant Bitcoin holdings are still scattered throughout the network. The sudden movement of long-unused wallets can lead to various interpretations, such as asset reorganization by early holders, enhanced security, or preparation for future transactions, but the specific purpose of this particular movement has not been confirmed.
