April imported car sales up 58.1%…EV sales proportion surpasses 50%
Last month, Tesla recorded its highest monthly sales ever in the imported car market, securing an overwhelming first place.
The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) announced on the 7th that new sales of imported passenger cars in April this year totaled 33,993 units, a 58.1% increase compared to the same month last year (21,495 units).
By brand, Tesla ranked first with 13,190 units sold.
This is the highest monthly sales volume ever achieved by an imported car brand, allowing Tesla to maintain its throne for three consecutive months.
This was followed by BMW with 6,658 units, Mercedes-Benz with 4,796 units, BYD with 2,023 units, and Volvo with 1,105 units.
Tesla also claimed the title of the most popular imported car model.
The Tesla Model Y topped sales with 10,086 units. Last month was also the first time a single model from an imported car brand exceeded 10,000 units in monthly sales.
The Tesla Model 3 followed with 2,596 units, while the BMW 5 Series (1,887 units), Mercedes-Benz E-Class (1,677 units), and BYD Dolphin (800 units) ranked 3rd to 5th.
In terms of sales by fuel type, electric vehicles showed a strong performance, largely driven by Tesla.
A total of 18,319 imported electric vehicles were sold, with their share of total sales (53.9%) exceeding half.
This was followed by hybrids (12,777 units, 37.6%), gasoline (2,734 units, 8.0%), and diesel (163 units, 0.5%).
By country, sales were highest from Europe (16,385 units, 48.2%), followed by the United States (13,611 units, 40.0%), and China (2,023 units, 6.0%). The share of purchase types was 65.0% for individuals and 35.0% for corporations.
Jeong Yun-young, Vice President of the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association, stated, "We maintained a favorable trend due to strong EV sales and the new car effect of some brands."
