U.S. President Donald Trump
A poll revealed that the percentage of Americans who disapprove of U.S. President Donald Trump's job performance has reached its highest point during his tenure.
According to a poll released on the 3rd (local time) by the U.S. daily Washington Post (WP) in conjunction with ABC News and Ipsos, which surveyed 2,560 American adults from April 24-28 (margin of error ±2.0%p), President Trump's job approval rating was 37%, similar to the 39% recorded in February.
However, the proportion of respondents who disapproved of President Trump's job performance was 62%, the highest recorded throughout his first and second terms.
While President Trump's approval rating among Republican supporters remained strong at 85%, his approval among Republican-leaning independents hit a low of 56%. Among all independents, Trump's approval rating was only 25%.
Americans expressed broad dissatisfaction with President Trump's leadership across the Iran war and several other major issues.
66% disapproved of President Trump's handling of the Iran war, with only 33% approving.
Approval ratings for economic issues, which played a crucial role in President Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election, have declined since the Iran war began in late February.
Approval for handling the economy fell by 7 percentage points to 34% compared to the February survey, impacted by the surge in oil prices due to the Iran war. Approval for handling inflation also dropped by 5 percentage points to 27% during the same period.
The lowest approval rating for President Trump's administration was for the cost of living issue, with 76% disapproving and only 23% approving.
When asked which party they would vote for if House elections were held today, 49% of registered voters said the Democratic Party, leading the Republican Party (44%) by 5 percentage points.
The gap widened compared to the February survey, where Democratic support was 47% and Republican support was 45%.
Among registered voters, the proportion of Democratic supporters (73% and 79% respectively) who considered this midterm election more important than past elections and said they would definitely vote was higher than that of Republican supporters (52% and 72% respectively).
The WP explained, "President Trump's low approval ratings are putting the Republican Party's narrow House majority at serious risk six months before the November midterm elections, and now even threatening their Senate majority."
