Stablecoin issuer Tether (USDT) surpassed $4.5 billion in net profit in Q1 2026 alone, raising its financial buffer against market volatility to an all-time high.
According to crypto media outlet BeInCrypto on May 1 (local time), Tether announced through its recently released attestation report that it recorded a net profit of $4.52 billion in Q1 2026. This profit primarily stemmed from interest income from its holdings of US Treasury bonds and an increase in asset value due to the rise in Bitcoin (BTC) price. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino evaluated this achievement as strong evidence supporting the stability of the stablecoin ecosystem.
Tether's excess reserves, or profit buffer, surpassed $6.03 billion, setting a new all-time high. This fund represents pure profit held in excess of 100% of the USDT issued, serving as a safety net to protect user assets in unexpected market crisis situations. Ardoino stated, "We are committed to maintaining a transparent financial structure and providing the highest level of security to our users." Tether manages a significant portion of its total collateral assets as cash equivalents in US Treasury bonds, ensuring an immediate liquidity system.
Tether's dominance in the stablecoin market was further solidified this quarter. Its total asset size exceeded $118 billion, a level that holds a significant position within the global financial system. Tether is expanding its business scope by reinvesting a portion of its net profits into strategic areas such as Bitcoin accumulation and new technology development. In particular, it is known to continue its policy of investing a certain percentage of its quarterly profits into Bitcoin, currently holding approximately 82,000 BTC.
Tether's robust performance enhances the issuer's credibility amidst strict regulatory scrutiny. The US Department of Justice and regulatory agencies have continuously raised questions about the reality of stablecoin collateral assets and demanded increased transparency. Tether strives to alleviate concerns about asset soundness by regularly publishing attestation reports verified by independent accounting firms. Such financial performance serves as the foundation for USDT to maintain its position as a key settlement method in the virtual asset market.
Tether plans to further strengthen its ability to maintain stablecoin value by allocating a portion of its future profits to safe assets. It will also pursue a strategy of diversifying assets, including gold and Bitcoin, to respond to dollar value fluctuation risks. It continues to invest in expanding global financial infrastructure, aiming to evolve beyond a simple issuer into a comprehensive digital financial platform. Tether's strong financial structure is acting as a positive factor in improving overall investment sentiment in the virtual asset industry.
