Mass production after 9 years since its debut in 2017
The 'Semi' electric freight truck, which Elon Musk had high hopes for, has successfully entered mass production after 9 years.
According to Reuters and IT specialized media Electrek on the 30th (local time), Tesla has begun mass producing Semi trucks at its Gigafactory in Nevada, USA.
The Semi is an electric truck designed for long-haul freight transport, and it is a model that was born after the longest gestation period at Tesla.
It was first unveiled in 2017 and was scheduled to begin production in 2019, but its release date was continuously pushed back, and it was only at the end of 2022 that a small quantity was produced and shipped.
These trucks were manually produced through a temporary process, and now they are moving into mass production.
This factory can produce 50,000 units annually, and Tesla plans to gradually increase production.
The Semi has the advantage of having more than double the range of existing electric trucks.
The long-range model can travel 500 miles (about 805 km) on a single charge, and the basic model can carry up to 82,000 pounds (about 37 tons) of cargo and travel up to 325 miles at once.
Using a 1.2 MW Mega charger, 60% of the total driving range can be replenished in just 30 minutes.
The price is also around $290,000 (approximately 430 million KRW), which is cheaper than other companies' electric trucks, leading to observations that it could change the landscape of the freight transport industry in the future.
Rudy Diaz, CEO of logistics company Hight Logistics, told Politico, "There's a reason why BlackBerry disappeared from the market and the iPhone became a bestseller," adding, "Tesla's products are far superior, and they are on the verge of reaching that point (bestseller)."
