Regarding the New York stock market, where a confluence of negative factors including war, AI investment, interest rates, and the midterm elections have converged, a prominent Wall Street bull expressed confidence in a "strong year-end close." The diagnosis is that even if just one of these uncertainties is resolved, funds that have been on the sidelines will pour into the market.
Fundstrat founder Tom Lee maintained his year-end target of 8,200 in an interview with CNBC on November 2 (local time). Despite the Nasdaq 100 index falling 3% last week and a series of events lined up for this week including the midterm elections, weekly unemployment claims, and monthly non-farm payrolls, he stated, "The market will finish the year strong." However, he acknowledged that a fierce battle is taking place beneath the surface. He noted that everyone he meets is concerned about something among war, AI investment, the bond market, the Federal Reserve (Fed), inflation, and the midterm elections, remarking, "The market has really held up well in the face of all these headwinds." He added that the market climbs a wall of worry, and if even one of these concerns is resolved, sidelined money will actively enter the market.
Lee believes that the midterm elections will be an opportunity to remove uncertainty. His judgment is that even if Democrats take control of both the House and Senate, it would not be a major shock to the market as former US President Donald Trump's veto power remains. He explained, "The market, in some ways, prefers a gridlock where Congress and the executive branch check each other," as this prevents policies from being pushed through too aggressively.
A point of concern for investors is data centers. There is worry that if Democrats gain control of both the House and Senate, the expansion of AI data centers could be halted. However, Lee offered a contrarian perspective on this. He pointed out that House Democrats would actually support AI after the midterm elections because data centers bring money to local communities. He argued that while it is a critical issue influencing votes now, it ultimately benefits jobs and the economy.
Lee expressed caution regarding signals from prediction markets. He recalled that during the 2024 presidential election, prediction markets showed a strong performance for Trump, significantly differing from opinion polls, which was a meaningful signal. However, in the current midterm elections, both opinion polls and prediction markets are pointing to a landslide victory for Democrats, yielding nearly identical results, thus failing to provide additional signals. He noted that there are voices in Texas suggesting Republicans might perform better than expected, indicating that prediction markets are not providing as meaningful signals as they did in 2024.
