A new exploration method has emerged for those interested in art museums but unsure where to start. Instead of precisely entering artwork or artist names, users can now ask questions about things they've always wondered about in complete sentences. Google has revamped its cultural content service, ‘Google Arts & Culture,’ expanding the cultural appreciation experience using AI.
On the 28th, Google announced on its official blog that it had revamped its mobile app and begun global distribution to mark the service's 15th anniversary. The core feature is conversational search. When users ask a question, the app provides explanations, images from partner institutions' data, and thematic stories. Google introduced examples of exploration such as cats in art or Impressionist museums in Paris.
The ability to start a search with a question is significant for beginners. It reduces the burden of 'what do I need to know to search?' For example, if you are interested in animal paintings, you can start with that theme, choose a work you like, and then broaden your interest to the artist and the background of its creation. Even before learning specialized terminology, you can make your favorite subject the starting point for cultural appreciation.
Experiential AI features have also been added. ‘Chrono Look’ is a feature that allows users to virtually try on costumes from various eras, while ‘Dial-an-Artist’ recreates conversations with historical figures and about their artworks. The home screen now gathers short cultural stories and experiential features, and 27 new destinations have been added to the city guide.
Virtual conversations with artists can heighten appreciation, but they must be distinguished from actual statements. Google also describes this feature as a 'simulated conversation.' Even if the on-screen character gives plausible answers, these should not be quoted as if they were letters or interviews left by the artist. It is best to verify information that sparks interest during a conversation by consulting artwork descriptions and resources from the collecting institutions.
There is also potential for integration with existing appreciation features. The official service offers high-resolution artwork viewing, 360-degree videos, and exploration of famous sites via Street View. After finding an artwork of interest through a question, users can continue their exploration by zooming in to examine detailed expressions or by exploring related locations.
Readers planning a trip can use this to preview the cultural content of their destination city. However, the fact that an artwork is featured online does not mean it is currently on display at the physical location. Actual visit schedules should be determined by checking the museum's exhibition list, closing days, and reservation information.
Usage conditions also need to be checked. Google announced that the revamped app would be distributed through Google Play and the Apple App Store.
A notable aspect of this revamp is the attempt to connect everyday curiosities with artworks and resources. For those who found exhibitions daunting, they can start with a familiar theme, such as a favorite animal, color, or a city they wish to visit. By reading AI explanations and then re-examining the actual artwork, cultural appreciation can lead to a more specific personal experience.
