Out of 11.62 million real-name account holders at the top 5 exchanges, only 3.79 million actually use them
It has been revealed that while the number of users holding real-name accounts at the top 5 domestic Korean Won (KRW) virtual asset exchanges has well exceeded 10 million, the number of actual users remains in the 3 million range.
According to data submitted by five exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, DigitalX, Gopax) to Representative Park Sung-hoon of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee, on the 1st, the total number of real-name KRW account holders as of the end of July was tallied at 11,629,685.
Among these, actual users numbered 3,795,580, accounting for only 32.6% of the total. This means that 2 out of 3 users who hold real-name accounts do not participate in trading.
Conversely, a simple calculation shows that 7,834,105 users, or 67.4% of the total, held real-name accounts but did not use them.
By exchange, Upbit had the highest actual usage rate at 35.3%. This was followed by Bithumb at 32.9%, Coinone at 20.3%, DigitalX at 15.8%, and Gopax at 3.0%.
For Upbit, 2,475,277 out of 7,014,677 real-name account holders were counted as actual users. Bithumb had approximately 1,089,696 out of 3,313,821.
Additionally, Coinone had 173,997 actual users out of 855,884, and DigitalX had 53,427 out of 338,400. Gopax only had 3,183 out of 106,903.
The number of real-name account holders has increased significantly recently.
Combining the top 5 exchanges, the number increased by 77.1% from approximately 6.625 million at the end of 2022 to 11.736 million at the end of last year.
Virtual asset real-name verification deposit and withdrawal accounts are considered a key means of connecting users' KRW deposits and withdrawals with anti-money laundering systems.
Major KRW trading exchanges have partnerships with banks for real-name accounts, and recently, competition for renegotiation and new partnerships between exchanges and banks has continued.
Representative Park Sung-hoon stated, "The figures confirm that the increase in the number of accounts and the expansion of actual virtual asset market usage are separate issues."
He added, "As the gap between real-name account holders and actual users is excessively large for some exchanges, financial authorities must investigate how many real-name accounts remain unused for long periods and how exchanges and their partner banks manage them, to ensure the substance of user protection and account management."
