KB Kookmin Card announced on the 28th that it conducted an offline payment demonstration using stablecoins at CU stores.
This demonstration was prepared to verify a new payment method based on an on-chain network in a real offline merchant environment, rather than using the existing card payment network.
To this end, KB Kookmin Card collaborated with BGF Retail [282330], NICE Information & Telecommunication [036800], and AhnLab Blockchain Company to implement the stablecoin payment process in a real environment at CU stores.
In this demonstration, a QR-based payment method was applied, where customers use stablecoins from their digital wallets to purchase products.
The process involves the customer selecting a product at a CU store, scanning the QR code generated during the payment process with their digital wallet, which then initiates a stablecoin payment request and transfer. The transaction result is sent to the payment system, and the payment completion status is reflected at the store.
KB Kookmin Card stated that through this demonstration, they confirmed the feasibility of implementing the entire payment process, from QR generation to stablecoin payment, blockchain transaction confirmation, and merchant payment completion, by linking existing offline merchant infrastructure with blockchain-based digital wallets.
An official from the card company said, "In preparation for the future possibility of stablecoins being utilized as a new payment method, we will continue to prepare a payment environment that can connect digital wallets and merchants while leveraging the strengths of the existing card payment infrastructure."
