The European Central Bank (ECB)'s blockchain-based financial payment pilot network 'Pontes' has officially launched. Ripple's distributed ledger technology, XRP Ledger (XRPL), has been adopted as one of the core infrastructures.
According to CoinGape on September 21 (local time), the European Central Bank officially launched the Pontes platform for linking central bank payment systems with Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). XRP Ledger technology-based infrastructure was named as one of the four key DLT platforms confirmed by the ECB for integration from the initial stage.
Pontes is an interoperability project that supports immediate settlement of wholesale Central Bank Digital Currencies (wCBDC) and tokenized securities for financial institutions in the Eurozone. The European Central Bank designed it to allow financial institutions to settle digital assets issued on various blockchain networks through a Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) method while maintaining their existing central bank account systems.
It is evaluated that European financial authorities have proven the technical reliability of XRP Ledger technology by fully adopting it for institutional payment network verification. As an enterprise-grade infrastructure with fast processing speed, low transaction fees, and strong security, it has gained a favorable position in the competition for standards in the European institutional payment market.
As the European Central Bank's payment innovation experiment gets into full swing, expectations in the virtual asset industry have also risen. XRP ecosystem technology is expected to play a key role in the global central bank's infrastructure construction process, further accelerating the integration of traditional finance and blockchain.
The launch of institutional blockchain pilot networks led by major European central banks is considered a significant turning point in the competition for digital financial hegemony. Global financial circles are focusing on whether XRP Ledger-based technology can establish itself as a de facto standard in European wholesale payment networks.
