Trump to Meet British, Japanese Leaders at UN Next Week…Also Venezuelan Interim President
Senior US officials announced that artificial intelligence (AI) and a 'tariff truce,' key issues between the two countries, will be on the agenda for the summit next week between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to AP, Reuters, and Kyodo News, in a phone briefing for reporters held on the 18th (local time), they stated that the two leaders are expected to exchange views on "AI issues" and the "Busan truce" (an agreement on tariff issues reached during APEC in 2025).
AI issues are likely to include controversies over regulating the pace of AI development, which has recently emerged as an issue with the 'human extinction theory,' and suspicions of Chinese companies stealing US AI technology.
The state dinner scheduled for the 24th will be attended by big tech CEOs in AI and related fields, including Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Tim Cook of Apple, Elon Musk of Tesla, Jensen Huang of Nvidia, and Michael Dell of Dell Technologies.
The Busan truce refers to the agreement reached between President Trump and President Xi when they met separately in Busan on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in Korea in late October last year, to contain the escalation of the tariff war.
President Trump plans to personally greet President Xi, who will be on a state visit to Washington D.C. for the summit, upon his arrival on the 23rd at Joint Base Andrews near Washington. This is highly unusual for a US president and signifies the highest level of courtesy for President Xi.
Officials stated that the summit day, the 24th, will include an official welcome ceremony at the White House, a review of the honor guard in the Rose Garden, and a state dinner. President Xi will return to China on the 25th.
Prior to President Xi's visit to the US, President Trump plans to hold bilateral meetings with leaders of major countries on the occasion of the UN General Assembly in New York next week.
Mike Waltz, the US Ambassador to the UN, stated in a phone briefing that the leaders President Trump will meet include British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and he will also meet with Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodriguez.
This will be the first meeting between the US and British leaders since Prime Minister Burnham took office in July. It will also be Rodriguez's first meeting with President Trump.
President Trump is also scheduled to hold talks with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, consisting of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
AP pointed out that this meeting comes as the US struggles to find a way to end the Iran war, which has lasted for over six months.
