Mara Holdings (MARA) has reversed its Bitcoin (BTC) selling trend during its AI expansion, returning to a purchase of $98.64 million.
According to crypto media outlet U.Today on September 16 (local time), Mara Holdings purchased 1,292 BTC. The purchase amount was $98.64 million. This transaction was confirmed by Arkham Intelligence's on-chain data. The transaction went through FalconX's over-the-counter (OTC) desk, with an average purchase price of $76,347.
This purchase contrasts with the selling trend that has continued for the past six months. In the first half of 2026, Mara Holdings sold over 20,880 BTC, securing approximately $1.5 billion. The funds were used for debt repayment and the construction of high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The company also early repurchased convertible bonds maturing in 2030-2031 with the proceeds from the sale.
After the large-scale sale, 9,658 BTC remained in Mara Holdings' operating wallet. Meanwhile, over 25,000 BTC of the company's holdings are stored in Fidelity Custody. This means that even after selling assets to expand its AI infrastructure, the company maintained a substantial Bitcoin reserve.
The cost burden on the mining industry is also increasing. According to CoinShares, the average mining cost per Bitcoin for listed mining companies rose to $75,500 in Q2 2026. In June, the average hashrate price hit an all-time low of $27.7 per PH/s per day. Core Scientific paid $41.9 million to cancel an order for 15 EH/s worth of equipment.
U.Today assessed this purchase as Mara Holdings simultaneously pursuing AI business expansion and cryptocurrency business. Mara Holdings continues to expand its AI infrastructure while maintaining its mining business and holding Bitcoin as a key financial asset.
