The XRP Ledger aims to complete its quantum-resistant system by 2028, pushing for a transition one year earlier than Ethereum (ETH).
According to U.Today on September 10 (local time), XRP Ledger developers plan to transition the network to a fully quantum-resistant system by 2028. Vet, an XRP Ledger Foundation contributor and validator, stated that new security protocols will be applied in parallel with the existing system starting in 2027. Ethereum's related transition schedule extends until 2029.
One of the key technologies is the ability to change cryptographic keys while retaining existing addresses. XRP Ledger users can switch to new cryptographic keys without changing their current r-address. On other blockchains, assets might need to be directly transferred to a new wallet during the introduction of quantum-resistant standards.
An emergency response system has also been prepared to cope with sudden advancements in quantum computing technology. XRP Ledger and RippleX developers are preparing a 'Quantum Day' response protocol. This method involves immediately isolating vulnerable accounts and switching them to security mode without disrupting the network itself. Developers have also begun testing quantum-resistant algorithms in a real environment.
Algorand has already introduced quantum-secure accounts using Falcon-1024 signatures. However, Vet pointed out that the entire Algorand network is not yet quantum-resistant. He said, "Quantum-secure accounts are only a part of it," adding, "Algorand is not yet fully quantum-ready." He also noted that most of the network still uses the Ed25519 standard.
Project Eleven will conduct security checks across all layers of the XRP Ledger, from validators to network infrastructure. According to the plan, existing and new signatures will be used in parallel in 2027. Subsequently, the quantum-resistant transition is expected to be completed through a mainnet upgrade in 2028.
[Article Key Summary]
-The XRP Ledger aims to complete a network-wide quantum-resistant system by 2028.
-The core of the response system is the ability to replace cryptographic keys while retaining existing addresses and immediately isolating vulnerable accounts.
-The plan is to use existing and new signatures in parallel in 2027, followed by a mainnet upgrade completion in 2028.
