Elon Musk's 2025 Tesla (TSLA) compensation value was estimated to be large enough to purchase approximately 10% of Bitcoin's (BTC) maximum supply.
According to TheStreet on September 2 (local time), Tesla's amended annual report submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) estimated CEO Elon Musk's total compensation value for 2025 at $158.35 billion. However, most of this amount is the accounting value of stock-based compensation. Musk did not receive $158.35 billion in cash.
TheStreet presented a hypothetical calculation based on the Bitcoin price of approximately $76,300 on May 1, when Tesla disclosed the compensation amount. If all $158.35 billion were invested in buying Bitcoin, approximately 2.075 million BTC could be purchased. This corresponds to about 10% of Bitcoin's maximum supply of 21 million BTC.
Musk has previously stated that he holds Bitcoin. In 2021, he disclosed that he holds Bitcoin, Ethereum (ETH), and Dogecoin (DOGE). In a podcast last year, he also put forward the view that if advanced automation technology reaches a stage where it meets human needs, the concept of currency will disappear, and energy-based currencies like Bitcoin could take on that role.
Tesla has also directly purchased Bitcoin. The company bought 43,200 BTC in February 2021 and allowed Bitcoin for car payments for a while. It later halted the payment policy due to the environmental impact of mining. In Q1 2021, it sold 10% of its holdings, and in Q2 2022, it disposed of approximately 75% of the remaining amount.
Tesla increased its Bitcoin holdings to 11,509 BTC in January 2025 through a small additional purchase. There have been no further sales since then. The value of Musk's 2025 compensation, if converted to Bitcoin, significantly exceeds the amount actually held by Tesla. However, the figure of 2.075 million BTC is a hypothetical calculation based on the May 1st price, not an actual purchase plan.
