Tesla's (TSLA) Cybercab is projected to expand the ride-hailing market by up to 60 times. However, a counter-argument directly asserts that Uber (UBER) will dominate the robotaxi market.
According to Stocktwits on September 1 (local time), Brett Winton, Senior Futurist at ARK Investment Management, projected that Cybercab could expand the ride-hailing market by 30 to 60 times. The U.S. taxi market grew from $8 billion in 2009, when Uber launched, to approximately $75 billion today. Winton analyzed that Uber expanded the market size by about 10 times by simplifying the user process and increasing vehicle supply at similar prices.
Winton believes that Cybercab can significantly increase vehicle supply while simultaneously lowering fares by more than half. He also argued that the consistency and safety of the service could improve. He stated, “It would be surprising if the market size only grew by 30 to 60 times, as we projected.” This analysis suggests that price reduction and increased supply could generate new ride-hailing demand.
Gary Black, Managing Director of The Future Fund, presented the opposite view. Black anticipates that 8 to 10 competitors will be able to produce autonomous self-driving vehicles at a cost similar to Tesla's. He explained that Uber could integrate autonomous vehicles from various manufacturers onto a single platform. He said, “While the costs will be similar to Tesla's autonomous ride-hailing service, Uber has a broader platform and marketing capability, making it easy to win.”
Black argued that unmanned autonomous driving technology is becoming a basic requirement for competition. He pointed out that Alphabet's (GOOG) Waymo, Baidu (BIDU), Amazon (AMZN), WeRide (WRD), Pony AI (PONY), and others are continuing to make large-scale investments in related technologies. Nvidia (NVDA) is also supporting the development of autonomous driving systems for automakers. Black dismissed the assumption that Tesla would capture more than 25% of the unmanned autonomous driving market by 2030 as "ridiculous." Wall Street estimates Tesla's vehicle deliveries for the same year at 2.6 million units, a significant difference from Tesla's previously stated goal of 20 million units annually.
Tesla is rapidly expanding its robotaxi business ahead of the planned Cybercab launch in Austin. According to Robotaxi Tracker, approximately 200 Tesla vehicles are operating without safety drivers in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. This is a 7-fold increase from about three weeks ago. Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt stated that 38 additional Cybercabs have been registered in Texas, bringing the total to 45. Austin's robotaxi service area has expanded by 9% to 264 square miles. Tesla reported that its robotaxi program has driven over 380,000 miles autonomously without significant incidents.
