Strategy (MSTR) expressed confidence in outperforming Bitcoin (BTC) in the next bull market, despite selling some of its Bitcoin holdings. Declaring itself the "JP Morgan of the cryptocurrency economy," it directly refuted market concerns about its Bitcoin financial strategy.
According to U.S. economic media outlet Benzinga on August 4 (local time), Strategy CEO Phong Le, in an interview with CNBC, assessed the current crypto downturn as a bear market marked by high interest rates, geopolitical tensions, AI-related capital movements, and regulatory uncertainty. Le stated, "Bitcoin is currently going through a bear cycle," adding, "Strategy is designed to outperform Bitcoin in the next bull cycle, which we anticipate will come next year."
Le explained that Strategy will buy and sell Bitcoin as needed, adjusting its capital structure. He clarified that recent sales were not due to forced liquidation or an abandonment of its Bitcoin strategy, but rather to pay dividends and repurchase preferred securities trading below par value. He emphasized that the value returned to shareholders and the increase in Bitcoin holdings per share are more important than the average Bitcoin acquisition cost.
This year, Strategy acquired over 35 times the amount of Bitcoin it sold, adding approximately 170,000 BTC. Its total holdings exceed 842,000 BTC, accounting for more than 4% of Bitcoin's maximum supply. Le stated, "Selling 1,000 BTC out of 840,000 BTC is not significant," and added, "Strategy is the JP Morgan of the crypto economy."
Le identified decisions regarding regulatory direction as the next challenge for the cryptocurrency industry. He predicted that regulation would proceed either by the passage of a U.S. cryptocurrency market structure bill through Congress or by the administration initiating rulemaking, as federal agencies have already prepared draft regulations. He stated, "The most important thing is to make a decision in one direction or another regarding the U.S. cryptocurrency market structure bill," and "Rules will be made."
