SK Hynix's failure to meet earnings expectations dragged down Micron Technology (MU) stock as well.
According to the investment media outlet Barron's on July 29 (local time), Micron's stock price fell 2.2% in early trading. The decline widened to 11% over the past two trading days. Since July, it has dropped 29%.
The direct reason for the stock price decline is SK Hynix's Q2 earnings announcement. SK Hynix achieved record-high quarterly revenue and operating profit, but it fell short of market expectations. Its operating profit margin also undershot Wall Street's forecasts.
SK Hynix's revenue increased by 257% compared to the same period last year. Operating profit surged by 557%, and net profit by 1,242%. Despite the record growth, failing to meet elevated market expectations led its American Depositary Receipts to fall by approximately 6% in after-hours trading.
In the Korean stock market, SK Hynix's stock price plummeted by up to 19% during the day before closing down 10%. As selling pressure spread across the memory semiconductor sector following the earnings announcement, Micron could not avoid a similar decline.
Barron's reported an analysis suggesting that once market volatility subsides, strong business fundamentals could support the recovery of memory semiconductor companies' stock prices. This recent stock plunge is an example of investor expectations regarding AI demand becoming excessively high, rather than reflecting the earnings themselves.
